Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure a pale Or and per chevron embattled Gules, in chief a millrind Vert and in base a fountain. Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Blue scroll inscribed "WE ARE PROUD TO SUPPORT" in Gold letters.

Symbolism
The embattled chevron (red) simulating a fortress, symbolizes the historic El Morro fortress built in 1584 by the Spaniards for the protection of the City of San Juan. The heraldic fountain, a symbol for water, refers to the waves and water of the San Juan Bay. The millrind, an iron reinforcement fixed in the center of a millstone to support the stone as it revolves on its axis when grinding wheat, is used in heraldry as a symbol of support. The color green alludes to the island as a country of eternal spring and to its tropical vegetation.

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 19 November 1970.
