The embattled chevron (red) simulating a fortress, symbolizes the historic El Morro fortress built in 1584 by the Spaniards for the protection of the City of San Juan. The heraldic fountain, a symbol for water, refers to the waves and water of the San Juan Bay. The millrind, an iron reinforcement fixed in the center of a millstone to support the stone as it revolves on its axis when grinding wheat, is used in heraldry as a symbol of support. The color green alludes to the island as a country of eternal spring and to its tropical vegetation.
